Query:  Can you be a marine biologist if you can't swim? 

I suspect the answer is yes, but perhaps only with accommodations, or perhaps by limiting one's field of expertise to lab-based (perhaps study or illustration of comparative taxonomy) or academic (perhaps writing and teaching). But it is hard to imagine how you could get a degree without spending significant time in the water...

Given the necessity that most sharks must forever continue to swim to flush and oxygenate their gills, perhaps their motto could be: 'Swim Free or Die!' - such a motto could also be used in a broader sense to counter the senseless killing of massive numbers of sharks for the wastefully ignorant harvesting of fins etc., as aphrodisiacs and soup...
