Estuary Blog Post - Francesca Conway

Today we visited an estuary at Cagnes-sur Mer. It was very interesting but what I found to be the most intriguing was a certain kind of eel found in the estuaries. There is a certain eel found in this estuary and when it is very young it is called a yellow eel. It starts out in the river or closer to the freshwater then as it becomes older and more mature they swim down into the saltier water and away from the freshwater out into the open sea. Then they are called silver eels. Once they reach sexual maturity they swim back toward where the freshwater and saltwater meet and they breed. The yellow eels are then pushed back up into the freshwater where they live for around a year before they swim back into the salt water and repeat the cycle!
